Des Moines district superintendent announces resignation

Feb. 28, 2022
Tom Ahart has served as the district's superintendent since 2013.

The Des Moines (Iowa) district's superintendent has announced he is resigning on June 30, a year before his contract was set to end.

Tom Ahart has served Iowa's largest school district for nearly a decade, reports The Des Moines Register

He was appointed associate superintendent in 2011, became interim superintendent in 2012 and began the job on a permanent basis in March 2013.

Ahart joins a growing list of central Iowa school district leaders leaving their jobs this year. Lisa Remy of West Des Moines and Art Sathoff of Indianola will leave their jobs in June. Ames Superintendent Jenny Risner of Ames resigned last June.

Des Moines school board chair Dwana Bradley in a statement called Ahart "accessible, candid, and sincere."

An interim superintendent will be named in the coming weeks for the 2022-23 school year. A national search to hire someone for the 2023-24 school year will follow.
