Arizona lawmakers work on budget as teachers' walkout enters 5th day

May 2, 2018
Legislature is considering proposal to give teachers a 20 percent raise by 2020.

Students at many public schools in Arizona will miss a fifth day of classes Wednesday as a statewide teacher walkout continues.

The Arizona Republic reports that Arizona Educators United, the teacher-led grassroots group, says #RedForEd walkout will go on through Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Legislature is meeting Wednesday to try to pass a budget plan in the midst of teacher protests outside.

The biggest piece of the nearly $10.4 billion plan is Gov. Doug Ducey's proposal to give Arizona teachers a 20 percent raise by 2020

At least 60 Arizona school districts, many of them are the among the state's largest, have alerted parents that their schools will remain closed Wednesday.

However, some districts have indicated they may re-open Thursday.

Walkout organizers have said the duration of the statewide walkout will depend on "the response from the Legislature and educators."

A number of school districts have stated in their notices to parents that any missed school days would likely have to be made up at the end of the year because the state requires a set amount of instruction days.

Some schools already have additional days or instructional hours built into their schedule and so may not have to add days. Other districts have said they may be able to make up missed time by adding hours to existing days, instead of adding days to the school year.
