Tennessee community college will close campus in Bristol

Oct. 27, 2017
Northeast State Community College opened the satellite site in 2013, but it has proven too costly to operate.

Northeast State Community College, based in Blountville, Tenn., will close its Bristol, Tenn. campus on Dec. 19.

The college says it acted after state officials concluded that the satellite campus was too costly to operate.

A recent audit by the Tennessee Board of Regents noted: “The benefits of the site do not justify the current cost of the agreement.”

The college pays $22,986.51 per month for the 16,000-square-foot site. Payment on the facility will continue until the lease expires in February 2018.

“This move will make the college stronger financially and increase the efficiency of operations,” says Northeast State President James King. “We appreciate the support we have enjoyed in Bristol and want to keep the door open for a future presence in the community.”

The Bristol facility opened in 2013 with 102 students. This semester, about 140 students are enrolled there

Personnel at the Bristol site would be relocated to one of Northeast State’s campuses in Blountville, Johnson City, or Kingsport.

The Entertainment Technology Program, which is housed at the Bristol campus, will be moved to the Blountville campus., Dual-enrollment students taking classes at the facility will move to Tennessee High in Bristol.
