Federal statistics show that the number of homeless students increased 10% from 2010-11 to 2011-12

More than 1.1 million homeless students were enrolled in U.S. school districts in 2011-12, federal statistics show. The National Center for Homeless Education, which serves as a technical assistance and information center for the U.S. Department of Education's  Education for Homeless Children and Youth program, says the 2011-12 figure of 1,168,354 homeless students represents a 10 percent increase over 2010-11 and a 24 percent increase over 2009-10.
