Elementary school in Eagleville, Pa., will close

Declining enrollment persuades Methacton school board to close Aububon Elementary.

Faced with declining enrollment, the Methacton (Pa.) School Board has voted to close Audubon Elementary School in Eagleville at the end of the school year.

The Times-Herald in Norristown, Pa., reports that decision to shutter Audubon comes almost two years after Superintendent David Zerbe recommended the closure.

Enrollment and capacity studies indicated that the school-aged population in the district was decreasing and that the cost of renovating Audubon and Arrowhead elementary schools would be prohibitive.

An action that would have closed both schools was defeated.

A consultant's study found that closing Audubon would result in a 10-year projected cost avoidance of $22.08 million. More than 600 K-3 students will be relocated to the district's three remaining elementary schools—nearly half of those absorbed into Woodland Elementary.
