Oakland, Calif., diocese announces closing of 5 Catholic schools

Jan. 20, 2017
Financial woes and inadequate enrollment claim 3 schools in Oakland, 1 in Union City and 1 in El Cerrito.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland, Calif., has announced that it will close five schools at the end of the 2016-17 year.

KGO-TV reports that the affected schools are St. Jarlath, St. Lawrence O’Toole, and St. Martin de Porres, all in Oakland; Our Lady of the Rosary, Union City; and St. Jerome, El Cerrito.

In a news release announcing the closings, the diocese says keeping the schools open is no longer viable.

"Although diocesan and school personnel have made major efforts to increase enrollment and reduce diocesan subsidies, these schools cannot project a successful return to sufficient enrollment and financial sustainability," the diocese says.

The five schools charge between $4,000 and $8,000 a year in tuition.

Families attending the five closing schools will have the opportunity to begin the process of applying to other diocesan schools for the fall of 2017.
