Baltimore city school officials say they are eliminating 171 positions.

The Baltimore Sun reports that a little more than 100 employees have been told that their jobs will end effective June 30. The remaining positions cut were already vacant. None of the eliminated positions were teachers and principals.

The district says in a news release that the job cuts were necessary to "address a significant budget gap resulting from increased expenses and flat revenue."

Some of the affected workers may be able to return to the district because of retirements and resignations that may occur in June, school officials say.

“This is a hard time for the entire City Schools community,” says Acting City Schools CEO Tammy Turner. “Eliminating staff is a difficult decision, and it isn’t one the district takes lightly. I want to offer my sincere gratitude to the employees who are leaving for their dedication and commitment to our students and schools.”
