Two elementary schools in the suburbs of Philadelphia will close at the end of the school year.
The Neshaminy (Pa.) board voted to close Lower Southampton Elementary in Feasterville and Oliver Heckman Elementary in Langhorne as part of a facility consolidation plan.
Students from Lower Southampton and most students from Heckman will be relocated to a new campus, Tawanka Elementary, that is scheduled to open in August.
Closing the schools is part of the Neshaminy district's "Road Map" plan to upgrade facilities and curriculum. Last year, Samuel Everitt Elementary was closed, and fifth-grade students in the district were moved from elementary campuses to middle schools.
Heckman has 381 students this year, and Lower Southampton has 433 students, the district says. Administrators estimate that closing Lower Southampton will save nearly $1.1 million in operating costs, and closing Heckman will save about $970,000 in operating costs.
