James F. Lane has been named the new superintendent in the Chesterfield County (Va.) district.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Lane, who is now superintendent of Goochland County (Va.) schools, will replace Marcus Newsome, who is retiring after 10 years.

“Chesterfield County’s focus on innovation, instructional technology, project-based learning and really teaching in the right way matches well with my philosophy,” says Lane, 38.

Chesterfield County, which has about 60,000 students, is the fifth-largest public school system in Virginia, and the 67th-largest district in the most recent AS&U 100 list of the nation's largest systems.

Lane has led the Goochland County district since December 2012.

“I have loved every minute of my more than three years in Goochland,” Lane says, “and will treasure the relationships that I have built with the faculty, staff, students, and community.”

The Goochland County board credited Lane with initiating a 1-to-1 technology program for elementary and middle school students, and expanding career and technical programming.

He will officially take the job in Chesterfield County on July 1.
