Expiring lease could force high school in San Diego to close

San Diego High School is on city land, and the lease agreement runs out in seven years.
March 18, 2016

San Diego High School, the oldest school in the San Diego Unified District, may have to shut down in several years when a lease with the city expires and control of the land reverts to the city.

KSWB-TV reports that a lease agreement between the city and school system calls for closing the school, situated on the edge of the city's downtown, in seven years. The land would become part of the adjacent Balboa Park. The district agreed to the lease around 1976, when rebuilt school facilities opened.

San Diego High has been on the site since 1882.

To keep San Diego High from closing, supporters are seeking to hold a public vote. It would require a two-thirds majority to overrule the provisions of the lease.
