The Texas Education Agency has appointed a conservator to take over management of the struggling South San Antonio school district.
Fox San Antonio reports that Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath's letter to the 10,000-student district announcing the intervention cited the school board's inability to work collaboratively with the district's executive administration as well as its failure to comply with a corrective action plan the agency has put forth last year.
Morath said the state takeover was necessary "to prevent substantial or imminent harm to the welfare of the district's students or to the public interest."
The San Antonio Express-News reports that the TEA has named Judy Castleberry, former executive director of the Region 20 Education Service Center, as the conservator.
The TEA issued a report in November stating that the South San Antonio district had failed to maintain control over its finances and that board was unable to work together. The district has had five superintendents in five years, state documents indicate.
