San Diego school board member Marne Foster has resigned and has pleaded guilty to violating the Political Reform Act by accepting an improper gift.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Foster entered a plea agreement with prosecutors in which she admitted to accepting a gift of more than $460 from a single source in 2014, a misdemeanor.
She was sentenced to three years probation, 120 hours of community service, and is prohibited from running for elected office for four years.
Foster was elected to the board in 2012 and had been planning a re-election campaign.
Evidence showed that philanthropist Jan Hunter paid for Foster’s son to attend — and travel to and from — a youth theater camp in Washington state. She also paid his air fare to attend freshman orientation at Pace University in New York.
Foster never listed the gifts in financial disclosure forms that elected officials are required to file annually.
Superior Court Judge Lisa Rodriguez ordered Foster to pay $3,487 in restitution to Hunter.
