The Charlotte Observer reports that the official enrollment fall 2015 tally for the district is 146,140 students, up 777 over last year. The school system had projected that it would add 2,400 students.
Projecting the district's enrollment has become more challenging since the state legislature lifted the cap on charter schools in 2011.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg says 15,535 students are enrolled in charter schools this year, an increase of almost 2,400 students, compared with last year, and more than the predicted increase of 2,000 students.
