Students--or former students, to be precise--are leading an effort to reverse the decision to close Marian Court College in Swampscott, Mass.
The tiny Catholic college shut down on June 30 because of "insurmountable financial challenges."
The decision by the board of trustees left 145 students without a school and five full-time faculty members, 15 staff members and a dozen adjunct teachers without jobs, Swampscott Patch reports.
A group led by students is working to save the school from extinction. It has established a gofundme.com site, and the group is trying to raise $250,000 to revive the institution.
Now that the college has officially closed, Taryn Walsh, a student leading the effort, says the students have shifted their focus to finding a way for Marian Court College to reopen at a later date, possibly at a new location.
“The good news is, the board seemed intrigued by the suggestion, and seemed to be supportive of this,” Walsh says.
