The Dallas school board has brought back former superintendent Michael Hinojosa to lead the district as interim superintendent.
The top post in the district became vacant last week when Mike Miles, who succeeded Hinojosa in 2012, announced his resignation as Dallas superintendent.
Hinojosa was superintendent in Dallas from 2005 to 2011, when he left to become superintendent of Cobb County (Ga.) Schools in the suburbs of Atlanta.
The district says in a news release that upon taking the interim post, Hinojosa told board members that he would serve as long as they need and pledged to continue to support recent reforms approved by the board during Miles' tenure.
“Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the Dallas Independent School District," HInojosa says. "This is where I went to school and where I started my career in education.”
Hinojosa left the Cobb County superintendency in May 2014 and has been working as an educational consultant.
Dallas will pay Hinojosa $25,000 a month as interim superintendent, The Dallas Morning News reports. In addition, Miles will receive $275,000 as he leaves the district. The board approved a payment of $125,000 in a separation agreement, and Miles will receive $150,000 earned over three years in a “retention incentive supplement."
