For the first time in more than 40 years, the yearly cost of attending Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., will not increase.

The Board of Trustees of the women’s liberal arts college has voted to keep tuition at $41,270 for 2012-13. There also will be no increase in the $12,140 cost of room and board. The college says this marks the first time since 1968 that the cost of attending Mount Holyoke has not risen.

"If we hope to retain our nation’s historic commitment to educating for democracy, colleges and universities cannot continue to threaten access and add to already burgeoning loan burdens for students," says Mount Holyoke President Lynn Pasquerella.

More than 70 percent of the college’s 2,200 students receive some type of financial aid, the school says.
