Washington D.C. Identifies Non-Resident Enrolled Students

An audit conducted on behalf of the Office of the State Superintendent of Education in Washington, D.C., says that 276 students who do not live in Washington, D.C., are attending public schools or receiving compensation for attending private special-education programs.

The audit found that 126 non-resident students were attending traditional Washington, D.C., public schools and not paying tuition; 32 non-paying non-residents were attending charter schools; and 118 non-residents were enrolled in private special-education programs that the Washington, D.C., school system was paying for.

Overall, the 276 non-paying students represent just 0.35 percent of the overall public school population of more than 78,000.
