Walt Rulffes has announced that he will retire later this year as superintendent of the Clark County (Nev.) School District.

Rulffes joined Clark County in 1998 as chief financial officer. Prior to that, he had been an administrator in the Spokane (Wash.) system, and superintendent of the Cheney (Wash.) district.

He became interim superintendent of the Clark County district in 2005, and in January 2006 was appointed to lead the district. During his tenure, the district has been one of the fastest growing in the nation.

“I've spent my last 12 years in the service of (Clark County), and I will be forever grateful for that opportunity,” Rulffes said in a news release. “But my wife's ‘bucket list’ for us is getting longer, and we need to start ticking off items that we've been putting off for years.”
