A small private school in Atlanta, facing an "unsustainable" financial situation, says it will close permanently at the end of this week.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Midtown International School will close its doors at 4:15 p.m. Friday, nearly two months before the academic year was to end.
The school serves 100 to 150 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, parents said. It bills itself as “Atlanta’s home for globally minded, gifted students.”
In an email to parents, the school's Board of Trustees said the school lost 20 students who were paying full tuition and has seen a decline in applications.
"[T]he attrition of more than 20 full-pay students across grades K–7 created a financial gap that the school was not positioned to absorb,” the board wrote. “After a thorough review of all available options, the board determined that continuing operations was no longer sustainable.”
An official statement to the public also stated the school was seeing a “significant increase in demand” for financial aid.
Tuition information about the school was no longer available on the website, according to Decaturish.com, but an archived version indicated that annual tuition was $26,000 to $27,000, depending on the grade.
