The Claremont (New Hampshire) School Board has voted to close Bluff Elementary School, a decision made just weeks into the new school year.

WMUR-TV reports that the closure is part of a plan to shrink a multimillion-dollar budget deficit.

Bluff students will be moved into available space in Disnard Elementary and Maple Avenue Elementary School, said Melissa Lewis, principal of Disnard. The first day for Bluff students at their new schools is scheduled for Oct. 20

Under the plan, school officials said a fourth and a fifth-grade class from Bluff would be going to Disnard Elementary. A first and second-grade class would be moving to Maple Avenue School. Two third-grade classes and two kindergarten classes would be combined at Maple Avenue to create one classroom for each grade.

The board said consolidation will begin immediately.
