The Cudahy (Wisconsin) district is beginning to plan for two fewer elementary schools in 2026-27.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Cudahy School Board has approved a plan that will move students in grades K to 4 into the district's two largest elementary school buildings — General Mitchell and Lincoln Elementary Schools. Fifth- and sixth-grade students would be relocated to Cudahy Middle School in 2026-27.

Kosciuszko and J.E. Jones elementary schools are set to shut down at the end of the 2025-26 school year.

The district has declining enrollment and extra space districtwide, a superintendent's advisory committee says. Student numbers have fallen from 2,183 students in 2020-21 to 1,985 students in 2024-25, according to state data.

The district's existing school buildings are plagued by aging, failing and inefficient infrastructure and outdated learning environments, the advisory committee says.
