San Francisco district rescinds layoffs for 151 workers

Officials say funds have been found to keep 34 counselors and 117 teacher's aides on the job.

The San Francisco school district has reversed plans to lay off dozens of educators as the district's fiscal health has improved.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the district canceled pink slips for 34 counselors and 117 teacher's aides after funds were found to keep the positions filled.

"We are thrilled to be able to restore essential positions that support our students and schools," Superintendent Maria Su saidsaid. "This is the result of deliberate, strategic planning and partnership at all levels."

The California Department of Education also granted the district the approval to hire 77 teachers to help fill classroom vacancies for the 2025-26 school year, in addition to 162 teacher positions approved earlier in May.

Based on the district's years of overspending and a $113 million deficit initially predicted for the coming school year, state officials had increased oversight, giving state fiscal advisers veto power over school board spending, including the hiring of staff.

State advisers have kept San Francisco under tight controls during this year's hiring and budget season, but in recent weeks, as the deficit has closed, they have eased restrictions on hiring and spending.
