The University of Toledo has begun demolition of three buildings on the Toledo, Ohio, campus.
The university says two residence halls--Academic House and International House--and one academic office building--Sullivan Hall--are being torn down in line with the university’s Campus Master Plan.
After the buildings are removed, the university intends to convert the area to greenspace, WTOL-TV reports.
"The highest and best use right now is greenfield versus having vacant or dormant structures standing on campus," says Interim University President Matt Schroeder. "To have an urban campus lush with green space where students can gather, relax, and take in nature is so important for that balance between work, classroom, and overall mental health."
No students were living in either Academic House or International House during the most recent academic year; the renovation and reopening of Presidents Hall provided additional living space for students.
The master plan seeks to reinvigorate the core of the Main Campus around Centennial Mall. The plan also has a goal of improving clinical and student spaces on campus.
The demolition will cost about $2 million and is expected to be completed by the beginning of fall semester.
