Enrollment declines in the district prompted the board's vote.

The Phoenix (Arizona) Elementary school board, citing enrollment declines, has voted to shutter two schools.

ABC 15 Arizona reports that Heard and Dunbar Elementary schools will cease operations at the end of the school year.

More than 500 students will be affected by the two schools closing. The district says Dunbar Elementary has 123 students, and Heard Elementary has 444.

The district also will carry out budget cuts, estimated to save more than $8 million, by  eliminating some positions, including bus attendants, drivers, teachers, nurses, and instructional assistants.

The board had been scheduled earlier this month to vote on the closures, but delayed the decision until Tuesday's meeting.

Financial troubles have caused other school districts in the Phoenix area to close campuses. The Roosevelt School Board voted in December to close down five of its schools in Phoenix, and the Cave Creek board voted earlier this year to close two schools--one in Cave Creek and one in Scottsdale.
