Guam officials seek funds for temporary high school campus

Simon Sanchez High School was heavily damaged in a 2023 typhoon.

The Guam Department of Education hopes to open a temporary campus for a high school that was heavily damaged by Typhoon Mawar in May 2023.

The Pacific Daily News reports that officials have been discussing at least two options for a temporary campus for Simon Sanchez High School: leasing Guam Housing Corp. land and building modular unit classrooms just across from the existing campus in Yigo, or leasing a never-opened shopping center building in Tumon.

Legislators are seeking to appropriate $7 million as part of the government of Guam’s share of any Federal Emergency Management Agency funding for the project.

Sanchez students have been attending split sessions at John F. Kennedy High School in Tamuning since the Sanchez campus in Yigo was heavily damaged by Typhoon Mawar.

The Guam education department is still awaiting a decision from FEMA on its application for funding for a temporary Sanchez campus. The location has not yet been decided.

Lawmakers say the goal is to provide a safe and conducive learning environment while a permanent campus is being rebuilt.

The school first opened as a junior high school some 50 years ago, in 1974.
