Richardson (Texas) district plans to close 5 schools

Feb. 23, 2024
4 elementary schools and a prekindergarten campus are to be closed because of declining enrollment and insufficient funding.

The Richardson (Texas) District plans to close four elementary schools and a Pre-K campus as part of a plan to address declining enrollment and a lack of state funding.

NBCDFW.com reports that the four elementary schools – Greenwood Hills, Springridge, Spring Valley, and Thurgood Marshall – will be consolidated into other elementary schools in 2024-25.

The Dobie Pre-Kindergarten campus will be closed completely beginning in 2025-26.

Two main factors  hav necessitated the closings – declining enrollment and a lack of funding from Texas legislators.

The Richardson district has more than 9,000 empty seats, according to figures released by the district. Each elementary school in question is at less than 60% capacity.

The closing plan, dubbed Project RightSize, “would reduce operating expenditures by an estimated $10.8 million per year,” according to a Richardson district news release.
