Neenah (Wis.) board decides to close an elementary campus in 2023

Dec. 22, 2021
Roosevelt Elementary will be shut down as the district opens a new high school and converts the existing high to a middle school.

After almost 100 years of operation, Roosevelt Elementary School in Neenah, Wis., will close at the end of the 2022-23 school year.

The Appleton Post-Crescent reports that the Neenah Joint School Board has voted 6-3 to move forward with facilities plan that will close the school on Doty Island.

Throughout more than hour of public comment, about 15 people spoke about the proposed closure. Island residents asked board members to delay the decision; teachers said it was challenging to teach in the school.

The approved plan calls for moving Roosevelt students, along with the those who attend Wilson Elementary School, to what is now Horace Mann Middle School. That campus will become an elementary school when middle school students move to the existing high school in 2023.

Alliance Charter School — currently housed in Roosevelt — will move to Wilson.

District officials say there have not been any formal discussions about what's next for the Roosevelt building.

The facilities changes follow voter approval last year of a $115 million referendum. It provides the district with funding for the construction of a new high school and renovation of the existing high school into a middle school campus for grades five to eight.

Both schools are scheduled to open in 2023.
