Virginia cancels the rest of the 2019-20 school year

March 24, 2020
It joins Kansas in deciding that the current academic year will not resume.

The state of Virginia has closed all schools for the rest of the academic year as the coronavirus continues to spread.

The Washington Post reports that Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said the state was “moving into a period of sacrifice” and canceled the remainder of the school year.

It is the second state to cancel the 2019-20 academic year;  Kansas did so last week.

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser says it’s possible the city will join Virginia in closing schools for the rest of the academic year, but no such decision was imminent, according to four council members who were on a Monday afternoon call with the mayor.

The mayor said she and her health department are monitoring coronavirus data and measuring whether containment measures are working before making that call.
