Pennsylvania district sells 2 elementary schools slated to close next year

Nov. 2, 2017
The Lehighton Area district will close 4 elementary schools next year when it opens a new campus.

The Lehighton Area (Pa.) School District has sold two of its elementary schools that are scheduled to close at the end of the school year.

WNEP-TV reports that East Penn Elementary in Lehighton and Mahoning Elementary in East Lehighton were sold for $350,000 each.

The buildings account for two of the four elementary schools the district will close when it opens a new $34 million elementary center next year.

The buyer of East Penn plans to convert the facility to some type of adult living center; Mahoning's new owner wants to open an alternative school for area children.

School board president Gloria Bowman says the district plans to put the remaining two elementary schools up for lease or sale.

The new owners of the schools will officially take over the buildings next summer.
