Eight schools and two school districts in King County, Wash., have earned recognition this month for their resource conservation efforts.
The schools are taking part in the county’s Green Schools Program, which helps schools and districts engage their students and staff in conservation strategies that help reduce waste, cut garbage disposal costs, and lower energy and water consumption and costs.
Participating schools can achieve recognition on three different levels. Level 1 focuses on waste reduction and recycling. Level 2 adds energy-conservation criteria, and Level 3 adds water-conservation criteria.
The districts recognized the Bellevue and Issaquah school systems. Each of Bellevue’s 28 schools completed all three levels of the program. The Issaquah district completed Level 2 criteria, and energy-conservation efforts have reduced districtwide energy consumption.
Six schools have been recognized this month as Level 1 Green Schools and two as Level 2 Green Schools. The Level 1 schools: Carriage Crest and Glenridge elementary schools (Kent School District); Helen Keller Elementary School (Lake Washington School District); Northwest Yeshiva High School, a private school in Mercer Island; Secondary Academy for Success (Northshore School District); and the Evergreen School, a private school in Shoreline. The Level 2 schools: Sunset Elementary School (Issaquah School District) and Sequoyah Middle School (Federal Way district).
