Broward County, Fla., recently reversed its decision to allow students with head lice to remain in school.
The district had made its initial decision based on recommendations from the American Association of Pediatrics, The National Association of School Nurses, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which agree that although head lice can be a nuisance, they are not a public threat. The district had also hoped that the policy would prevent students from missing so many days of school.
But students and teachers complained about the policy, causing the district to revert to its prior policy of requiring students with head lice to stay out of school until they are free of both lice and nits.
