Percentage of special-education students grows in Detroit

More than 18 percent of district's students are in special-ed programs

From The Detroit Free Press: As enrollment in the Detroit public school system continues to decline, the proportion of students with special needs is growing. This year, about 9,000 students -- more than 18 percent of the estimated 49,900 in the district – are enrolled in special education. Some reasons for special-education students making up a higher percentage: Special-education students have left the district at a slower pace, and the district offers special-education services that other districts and charter schools do not provide.
