North Dakota school is rebuilt on higher ground

Rising lake level made the old Minnewaukan School a flood risk
Jan. 4, 2013

From The Grand Forks Herald: The Minnewaukan (N.D.) district has opened a $10.1 million school to replace an aging facility that was deemed too close to a chronically flooding lake. The new school sits on a hill about 30 feet higher than the original site in a new development. The old school has been threatened for several years by flooding from Devils Lake. When the flooding began in the early 1990s, the lake was nearly 30 feet lower than it is today and about 8 miles away from the town. In 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had to build a 3,000-foot-long temporary dike to keep the water from reaching the school. The new Minnewaukan School has about 305 students from pre-kindergarten through high school.
