New Jersey high court not convinced on school funding changes

Supreme Court orders hearings to determine if state aid distribution is fair to needy districts
Nov. 19, 2008

The New Jersey Supreme Court has rejected Gov. Jon Corzine's request to end the so-called Abbott school funding case, a lawsuit that has forced a succession of governors to steer billions of dollars in special aid to Newark, Camden and 29 other needy districts. The court has ordered a series of hearings in which Corzine will have to convince a special master that his new formula for distributing $7.8 billion in state school aid eliminates the need for special treatment of the Abbott districts.
