DECEMBER 2008...from The Detroit Free Press: The U.S. Department of Energy says Michigan State University in East Lansing has won the competition to be home to a $550 million nuclear physics research facility, creating more than 5,700 construction and 300 permanent jobs. The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, or FRIB, would be at least 1,000 times more powerful than the machines now running at MSU's National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. Construction is set to begin in 2013 and end in 2017.
