Northland College in
Ashland, Wis., has eliminated the use of trays in its cafeteria. The school began the effort in the fall semester with "trayless Tuesdays," which saved about 138 gallons of water each week. Based on the success of the program, the college decided to eliminate trays entirely. School officials say eliminating trays enables dishwashing machines to clean dishes more efficiently. The lack of trays also helps prevent students from overeating or taking food they don't eat.
