Most Florida schools have weather radios to monitor threatening conditions

They weren't a factor last week, when storms struck in the early morning hours.

Most Central Florida public schools have weather radios that provide automatic alerts when a tornado is approaching. One drawback: Someone has to be there to hear the warning. The radios weren't much use when tornadoes swept through Lake and Volusia counties early Friday, hours before classes were to start. However, school officials say the radios have helped keep children safe on other occasions and are an important tool in tracking bad weather.
