Legislators say state spending needs to be cut

A lawmaker-approved plan to spend $1 billion on building projects atArizona's three universities and stimulate the construction industry is likely dead after a legislative committee that was set to review the package canceled its meeting. Given the state's growing deficit, lawmakers on the Joint Committee on Capital Review have been blocking the bond-funded projects, saying that the spending needs to be trimmed or cut entirely as they look for ways to make up for a shortfall that could reach $2 billion.

FROM OCTOBER 2008: A $1 billion construction plan for Arizona's three state universities has hit a snag after a key legislative committee failed to take action on the projects. The Joint Committee on Capital Review decided against reviewing projects slated for Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University because of the state's deepening budget crisis.
