Wake County (N.C.) board approves choice-based attendance boundaries

Oct. 19, 2011
Action comes after two years of debate

From The Raleigh News & Observer: The Wake County (N.C.) school board has adopted a choice-based method of deciding where students will attend school. The vote, coming after two years of discussion, demonstrations and dissension, represented a departure from the system's factoring in diversity when determining attendance boundaries. A runoff election - one that would determine political control of the board - could decide whether the plan, which would be put into place in 2012-13, moves forward as is.
