Three Iowa families contend in a lawsuit that the state has failed to provide public school students with an adequate education as required by the state's constitution and code. The suit, filed in Polk County District Court, asserts that state officials have allowed the quality of Iowa's education system to significantly slip, so much so that high school graduates are inadequately prepared for college or the workplace. The lawsuit asks Iowa officials to adopt a challenging statewide curriculum to be used in all public schools and a pay scale for teachers that is based on performance rather than years of experience. It also asks to end disparities among Iowa's 364 districts.
