South Carolina teen admits plot to blow up high school

From The State: A South Carolina teen has pleaded guilty to plotting to blow up his high school. Prosecutors have agreed to ask for a 10-year prison sentence. Ryan Schallenberger, 19, admitted that he planned to launch an attack in 2008 on Chesterfield (S.C.) High School. Schallenberger's lawyer says the teen, who was diagnosed with depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder while in jail, takes responsibility for what he did and has taken medication since his diagnosis.

MAY 2008: A teen accused of plotting to blow up his South Carolina high school has been indicted on three federal charges — but no longer faces a more serious charge that carried a possible life sentence. Ryan Schallenberger, 18, who was a senior at Chesterfield High School in Chesterfield, S.C., faces three explosives charges that carry a combined maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. Authorities say Schallenberger’s parents called police after he had ordered ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer used in 1995 in the Oklahoma City bombing. Deputies searching Schallenberger’s home seized several items, including a hate-filled journal lauding the Columbine killers and an audiotape he left to be played after his death.
