Enrollment slows in San Diego area

24 of 42 public school systems in the county have fewer students than last year.

For the first time in a quarter century, middle and high schools in the southern part of San Diego County, Calif., aren't growing. Among the county's 42 public school districts, 24 have fewer students this year than last year. San Diego Unified School District's enrollment has plunged by nearly 11,000 students in six years. The Santee and Lemon Grove school districts have lost students every year since 1999.
