One of the first charter schools in Kansas City, Mo., will close at the end of this school year. Academy of Kansas City will be closing, but some of the 376 students may end up at a new charter school at the same location. Charter School Administration Services, the management company that put up the original money for the school in 1999, has decided not to continue its contract. The school and its sponsor, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), have been working to provide students with a smooth transition to another school. In addition, UMKC has approached EdisonLearning, a charter school management company, about opening another charter school in the same building that housed Academy of Kansas City.
