Tornado-ravaged district estimates property damage will drastically lower tax revenue
From The Joplin Globe: Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says the state will provide funding of up to $1.5 million for the Joplin School District to offset a projected drop in property tax revenue as a result of damage from a May 22 tornado. The announcement was prompted by preliminary assessed valuation figures given to the school district by assessors in Jasper and Newton counties. District officials have estimated a revenue shortfall of $750,000 to $1.5 million because of the tornado, which destroyed or damaged thousands of homes and businesses.
