University of Illinois will retire American Indian mascot

Many found Chief Illiniwek an offensive stereotype; others view him as honoring Native American heritage.

The University of Illinois' American Indian mascot, Chief Illiniwek, no longer will perform at athletic events on the school's main campus after next week, when the men's basketball team plays its final home game of the season.
School officials have announced the retirement of the 81-year-old mascot, who is portrayed by buckskin-clad students who dance at football and basketball games and other athletic events.
