Historical commission objects to Northeastern University residence hall plans

From The Boston Globe: Northeastern University’s plans to construct a 17-story residence hall in Boston face a significant roadblock. The Massachusetts Historical Commission said that demolishing a YMCA gymnasium to construct the $75 million student housing project would have an adverse effect on the YMCA, the neighboring New England Conservatory of Music, and nearby historic districts. The commission suggests that the university consider other locations, or low-rise buildings. The university is joining with Phoenix Property Co. and the YMCA of Greater Boston to build housing for 720 Northeastern students. Northeastern pledged to city officials four years ago that it would embark on a major student housing plan after complaints mounted of loud parties and disturbances by students living in nearby neighborhoods.
