Joan McCray says the board fired her because she was looking into alleged district mismanagement

The former chief financial officer of Detroit Public Schools has sued the school board. She contends that she was fired in retaliation for looking into enrollment inflation and other suspected district mismanagement. Joan McCray, who was fired Dec. 15, says she reported misconduct and mismanagement to the board, state and FBI, according to her federal lawsuit. Board members have said she was fired after the district's fiscal problems ballooned from a surplus to a projected $408 million deficit. The district now says its deficit is more than $150 million.
