The city of Detroit and school district officials are trying to make sure high school students affected by this year's closings get to school smoothly. Until Sept. 14, students will be allowed to pay the student fare on city buses, even without a student identification card. Four high schools in the district closed last Spring.

EARLIER: Detroit Public Schools has unveiled a transportation strategy that includes bus service for thousands more elementary and middle school students and free city bus passes for high school students affected by the planned school closures. Officials say the new plan will make the school system more attractive for parents and improve safety for children who otherwise would have to walk long distances.
