Detroit school board hires interim superintendent

John Telford would run district if board regains authority from emergency manager
June 15, 2012

From The Detroit Free Press: The Detroit school board has voted to hire an interim superintendent who would run the school district -- if the board regains its authority in coming weeks or months. John Telford, 76, of Detroit was named interim superintendent and also will head the board's search for a permanent superintendent. He will receive $1 in salary if he gets authority to act as superintendent. The vote came the same day a Michigan Court of Appeals decision ruled that the state law governing emergency managers may be put to a public vote in November. Since last year, state-appointed emergency manager Roy Roberts has been in charge of district operations, leaving the school board with virtually no power.
