Beverly, Mass., breaks ground on new high school wing

For students and residents inBeverly, Mass., this week's groundbreaking at Beverly High School was historically significant. On the site of the school's lower parking lot, the city will undertake its costliest public spending project. It will spend $80.1 million to build a new educational wing at the school. The construction comes after almost a decade of debate about the future of the school and whether the city could afford to build a new educational facility. To read The Boston Globe article, click here. FROM DECEMBER 2008: The city of Beverly, Mass., is expected to break ground in January on an $80 million high school. In March 2006, the City Council voted to approve spending up to $65 million on the project. But since then the project cost has gone up. The construction project calls for a new four-story academic wing to replace existing classrooms, which will be demolished. The city also will renovate the schools’ existing core facilities.
